Ransford Rogers a/k/a Rice Williams a/k/a the Humbug Man

Searching for information regarding a scam artist/con man named Ransford Rogers, a/k/a Rice Williams who bilked people out of money in Adams Co., PA abt. 1797 (this was while Adams Co. was still part of York Co.), Morristown, NJ (abt. 1788) and Exeter, NH (abt. 1800).

He is also purported to have run other scams in "several Southern states."

He was supposedly illiterate, but was a schoolmaster "from Connecticut." He had accomplices, one by the name of Mr. Goodenough.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I believe he is one of my ancestors, the husband of Belinda Flower. Belinda was b. in Agawam, MA, the d/o Ozias Flower and Abigail Leonard. Intentions of marriage were published in W. Springfield, MA, abt. 13 Oct 1787 (his name is listed as Raneford Rogers). Belinda and Ransford had at least three children: Flavia Rogers who m. Richard Bagg, Caroline "Matilda" Rogers who m. Wakeman Brooks (she was his 2nd wife, and they are my 3rd g-grandparents), and Millicent/Mellecent Rogers. Matilda and Wakeman settled in Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., PA, and Belinda spent her last years living with them. Belinda is buried in the Leona Cemetery in Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., PA, as is Wakeman (and presumably Matilda).

In my 2nd g-grandfather's short biography (Ruggles Kent Brooks), he states that his grandfather was Ransom Rogers who was a doctor during the Revolutionary War.

There is also Ransford Rogers who married a Sally Goodnow in Berlin, VT, in 1805 (interesting that he marries a "Goodnow" and a partner was a "Goodenough")? This could be the same man.

I have no further information on Ransford/Rainsford/Raneford/Ransom Rogers a/k/a Rice Williams.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
