When misinformation is published - whether in print or on the internet - it's almost impossible to get rid of it. So let's try one more time on the HUBBELL-HAWLEY marriage:
1) Matthew Hubbell was born 4 Sept 1723 Newtown CT (son of Peter Hubbell and Katherine Wheeler), and married 6 Dec 1743 at Newtown to Abiah HAWLEY (not Abiah WOLCOTT, as most Hubbell genealogies have it). The marriage is very clearly recorded in the Newtown vital records (Vol. 1, p. 42) at the town clerk's office! I have photocopies of the old handwritten records as well as of later typescripts.
2) Matthew Hubbell died 20 Mar 1772 in his 50th year at Lanesborough MA. His widow Abiah married second (between 1772 and 1777) to her second cousin, Jehiel Hawley - a Loyalist who died on his flight to Canada in Nov. 1777. Abiah HAWLEY - now widowed a second time - signed papers in Jehiel's estate proving her identity; some of these were witnessed by Wolcott Hubbell and his wife Mary of Lanesborough, son and daughter-in-law of Matthew Hubbell and his wife Abiah Hawley. Abiah probably returned to Lanesborough with them, as she died there 18 Dec 1897 in her 75th year (giving her a birth year of 1722-23) and is buried next to Matthew Hubbell in the Lanesborough cemetery as Mrs. Abiah HAWLEY.
3) Matthew Hubbell's will (dated 24 Feb 1772 Lanesborough) names his wife Abiah; his 3 sons, Wolcott, Matthew and Calvin; and his daughters Lucy, Eunice, Ann, Anna, Sarah and Ursula.
The births of Ann (18 Sep 1744) and Anna/Anah (28 Dec 1846) are recorded in the Newtown CT town records, with the record of their parents' marriage.
Baptisms of 3 more children (Ursula, 14 Apr 1751; Silas, 27 May 1753; and Matthew, 4 July 1761) are recorded at nearby Roxbury CT.
We've not (yet) found birth or baptism records of Wolcott (b. ca 1754), Sarah (probably b. between Anna and Ursula), Lucy (b. before 1758), Eunice (b. ca 1759) or Calvin (b. ca 1764).
More information - and documentation - can be found in my article published June 1999 in The Connecticut Nutmegger, Vol. 32, No. 1, pp. 21-35.
