Is STEPHEN LEONARD connected to BENONI LEONARD? What's the connection between Stephen R. LEONARD with Frederick b. c 1820 & Charlotte LEONARD?
My ancestor, Benoni LEONARD, MaryEtta's father, was born ca. 1772, son of Samuel [aka Black Sam] LEONARD [d. 1824 Constantia, Oswego Co., NY, and m. 1773 Sarah or Mary WILLIAMS in Taunton, Bristol, MA Massachusetts.
STEPHEN LEONARD was a printer and went to Putney, Windham Co., VT [Vermont] in 1843 where he met up with John NOYES [see below].
Leonard moved with the "community" to Oneida Co., NY [New York], shortly after and eventually married Fanny WHITE who was also a member of the Putney group. Fanny WHITE [Mrs. Fanny N. LEONARD] had correspondence with Harriet SKINNER, the sister of John NOYES. These LEONARDS were in Oneida Co., NY, at the right time I'm researching; they could be my relatives.
John Humphrey NOES born 1811 in Vermont, died 1886 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and was called "an American utopian socialist". He founded the "Oneida Community" in 1848 and their beliefs were unbelievably extreme. He studied theology and Yale University, embraced the idea of "Perfectionism," and considered himself Perfect and free from sin. Yale revoked his newly-earned license to preach. He married Harriet Holton.
In 1838 he and his followers moved form Vermont to Oneida, NY. The
Oneida Community survived until 1879 with 300 people in that community
and also in Brooklyn, Wallingford, CT, Newark, NJ, Cambridge and Putney
in VT. They had successful industries: raising and canning fruits and
vegetables, manufacturing animal traps and silk threads, making leather
travel bags and palm-leaf hats. Just before the demise of the Oneida
Community, he fled to Canada He came back months later and the
"community" was dissolved. He then returned to Canada, never to return
to the U.S. in life, but was buried with some of his followers in Oneida
John's son, Pierrepont NOYES, consolidated the former "community" into
one business, the silverware business.....and that's where Oneida
