Jean Baptiste Benoit with his family can be seen in the 1920 US census in Norwich, Connecticut. The name is entered and transcribed as “John Benoit.”His age is given as 54, and the age of wife Emma is 51--roughly consistent with your account. With them are the following children:Exilde Bouchard, age 34 and listed as born in Canada; Henry, 32, born in Michigan; John, 29, born in Massachusetts; Evelyn, 21, born in Massachusetts. There are also two children of Exilde born in New York: Charles Bouchard, 12; and Exilde Bouchard, 9.
In the 1900 US census, we see the family in North Adams, Massachusetts (Enumeration District #49, sheet 9A).The name is entered and transcribed as “John Benway.”John and Emma have been married for four years, and there is an unusual notation saying that she is his second wife--a fact which is corroborated by a comparison of the ages of the children with the length of the marriage.Children listed are as follows:“Exelia,” 11, born in Canada; “Emery,” 12, born in Canada; “John,” 8, born in Canada; “Climosia,” 6, born in Canada; Blanche, 3, born in Massachusetts; Evelina, 2, born in Massachusetts.Living in the same house were John Benoit, age 62 and wife Lena, age 66.I took them to be the parents of Jean Baptiste Benoit born 1864, even though the relationship was not listed.
