Did you physically search the Salisbury town records, or did you have someone do it for you? I've searced those records myself and they can be very tricky. My grandfather John Deneen showed up as "boy Denny". It was only because I knew his birth date and mother's maiden name, that I was able to find the record at all. Do you find him in the 1870 census? What town? His parents in the 1860? What town?
