I have a "probable" for the father of Giles. In the 1820 Census for Bethlehem,Litchfield, Ct there is listed ( census images, not an index) A Jonah Bartou. In his household is one male under 10, one male 16-26, 3 females under 10, and one female 16-26. Also 1 unnaturalized alien (not an extra person, but either Jonah or his wife).
I also found a "possible" for the father of Jonah, in the same census. There is a Stephen B**tu.[Can't quite make out the second two letters in the surname, but could easily be "ar"]. In his household is one male over 45, and one female over 45. Also the same 1 unnaturalized alien.
By 1830, there is no sign of either family in Bethlehem.nor apparently anywhere else in CT.
Have you accessed the Barbour Collection of Vital Records for CT., for births, marriages, etc? If not, I have access to them and can check for you sometime this week or next.
