The Railroad in Litchfield Co, CT

One of my family - Michael Joseph HASTINGS - worked the railroad line - and his family lived at the railway station (now the Merwinsville Hotel) in Gaylordsville, CT. (the village that is part of the town of New Milford - in Litchfield Co). He was born in 1867 in Co Clare, IRL - and arrived with other siblings and several KELLY family siblings - in the late 1880s. He died in 1941 in New Milford, CT.

Anyone know:
(1) How to get records of his railway work?
(2) Locate a good source for "what the actual rail work was like"? Not on the train - but on the tracks - and at the stations....

I have some information on the local station in Gaylordsville and its history. Now would like to understand what the work was like - and then what "my" ggrandfather might have been doing...

Thanks - debbie
