Founders Monument in Hartford

There is a black and white photograph of the Hartford Founders' Monument in the book "By Their Markers Ye Shall Know Them" by William Hosley and Shepherd Holcombe, Sr., published 1994. The book is a chronicle of the history and restoration of Hartford's ancient burying ground and contains much interesting information on the "founders" of Hartford, as well as biographies of early Hartford residents and over 500 inscriptions on the grave markers. (The earliest burials took place around 1640 and it remained Hartford's only burial ground until 1801.)
The original Founders' Monument was erected in 1837 on the grounds of the cemetery. Made of 8 slabs of brownstone around a concrete center it had deteriorated greatly and was replaced in 1986 with a Connecticut granite obelisk. The names of the first settlers of Hartford on the original monument were in no logical order and some were missing...on the replacement there is a complete listing in alphabetical order on the four sides of the monument. A list of the 163 names on the monument is on page 140 of the aforementioned book.
