Doreen, The sources I am talking about do not come from family genalogy CDs. In New England, many conscientious people who were interested in genealogy, wrote histories of ther towns in which they also included genealogical data pertaining to families living in the town. There are also other types of books that contain information genealogists look for. These are research materials that people look for to get and document information about their families. Many of these books were published in very limited numbers and are very hard to find, even when you live in the area. There is much information being shared on this list that is being taken from books that are very hard to find outside of New England. The books the material is being taken from is identified. The value of this type of information is it gives you place you can then contact for primary documention or a published resource that either confirms or contradicts the information you have. This is an opportunity to search in books you may never find in a library near you. Many experienced researchers have been finding information which they have been looking for for many years. It also gives people the opportunity to obtained published information from books they could never use otherwise. Once you know what you want, you can usally find someone who can find it and photcopy it for you. You will find information, but you will have to work to find it. You won't be looking at a nice little package of information someone else has put together. It's going to take patience and perserverence to go through the books. I am getting very good at using the find option on my internet browser. The best way to find the books that have been posted is to scroll through the messages. You won't have any trouble indentifying them. I share your concern about genealogical charts that are posted by individuals with no indication of where the information came. from. I may read, and even print some of them, but the information does not become a part of my records until I can verify it from other sources such as commercially published records taken from primary sources, and better still, confirmation from the original, primary record. This reply service Genforum is now offering works well.
