St. Charles (Illinois) Review, Aug. 3, 1878
An old parchment on which is inscribed a deed transferring a certain tract of land in Connecticut, from one Auwoonoro, a chief of the Mohegan and Fox tribes, - "for and in consideration of a valuable consideration to him in hand well and truly paid," - to James Croat, of Hartford county, Connecticut, has been shown us by Dr. Gillette. It bears date, January, 1676. The Sachem's signature or mark, very much resembled the form of a stork in one place and a thick-set bird in another. This is a rare relic and worthy of preservation. We shall, some day, take advantage of the doctor's kind invitation and inspect his cabinet of revolutionary relics, when we will print some matters of interest to our readers concerning it.
