Virginia,

Have you seen the 1880 census in Westport where Bessie and her mother are living with her mother's parents and grandmother? Bessie's mother is listed as a widow in this census.

On the 1900 census, Edgar, Grace Charles and Howard are listed. Edgar is shown as widower, so Bessie must have died prior to 1900.
