1700's Fairfield County/Dutchess County NY

Could SKS please tell me where to look for 1700's births which have been listed on some family trees as Dutchess County and on others as Fairfield County.
I'm researching the STURDEVANT family and am stuck at Jonathan b. 1760 and Charity b.circa 1720. Trying to find whether there is a link there. The changing of boundary lines has me really stumped so I would much appreciate any advice that could help.
Thanks! Carol
