Re: Nancy Jane Cruzan (b. 1836, Rush Co., IN), Scott Carson (b. abt 1822/1823, Hamilton Co., IN), Thomas F. Chew, Sarah Jane Melissa Chew, Alfred Lennox Chew, Will Carson

I have posted on many sites requesting information on the above persons in the past, and this past weekend I found some information about the family and thought I would pass it along. Also, if anyone has information on the Carson family of Hamilton Co., IN, and later of Fayette Co., IN, please contact me.

To preface, a few months ago I posted a query requesting information on my g-grandmother, Melissa Chew and received the following information:

Her full name was Sarah Jane Melissa Chew
Her brother was Alfred Lennox Chew
Her mother was Nancy Jane Cruzan (Nancy's father was Garrett Cruzan)
Her father was Thomas F. Chew
Her step-father was Scott Carson
There were two daughters, Cora and Maretta/Marietta Carson.

There was no additional information about the second husband and daughters. When I read this I remembered my mother telling me her father had often spoke of his mother's brother, Will Carson. Until now I had always assumed his last name was Chew.

I found a biography of William A. Carson in the publication: History of Fayette County, Indiana, published in 1917. William A. Carson's, parents were Scott Carson and Nancy J. (Cruzan) Carson. I also found an 1870 census record for Scott and Nancy, but didn't discover until I got home that my printout of that record was incomplete. I am sure I saw SJM and Alfred listed, but cannot remember seeing anything about the two Carson girls. I also found census records for William and family.

This is the information I gleaned from the biography and the census records:

William A. Carson (b. abt 1870, d. aft. 1920)

William's father: Scott Carson (b. 1822-1823 – age on 1870 census was 47 – in Hamilton Co., IN; d. 1872 in Hamilton Co., IN – William's biography states William was left an orphan at 2 years of age due to his father's death.

Scott Carson's occupation was butcher in Hamilton Co., IN. As a side note, Sarah Jane Melissa's first husband, James Frank Snowden's occupation on the 1880 Hamilton Co., IN census was butcher.

William's mother: Nancy J. Cruzan was born in Rush Co., IN, abt 1836 – her age was 34 on the 1870 census, and she died in 1901 in Glenwood, Fayette Co., IN, where she is buried (per William's biography). She married (1) Thomas F. Chew before 1858 and lived in Iowa, then (2) Scott Carson.

The biography states that 'Some time after the death of her husband, Mrs. Carson with her son, William A., left her home in Hamilton county and came to Fayette county…'.

Scott and Nancy married in 1869, and had three children. Two had died before the 1917 publication, and no mention was made as to gender; however, I would assume they would be Cora and Maretta/Marietta.

In 1890, William A. Carson (b. 1872; d. aft. 1917) married Bertha Hinchman, daughter of J.H. Hinchman and Amanda Moffett. They had two children, Guy W. Carson (b. 12-1890) and Hazel Carson (b. 11-1892/1893). Guy married Vida Ayres and they had three children, John, Eva and Lowell. As of 1917, Hazel was single and living with her parents. Both Guy W. and Hazel had high school educations.

William worked on a farm when he was a boy and continued that profession, purchasing a 63-acre farm in Fairview Twp., Fayette Co., IN, abt 1870. He raised Poland China hogs and Jersey cattle, and was the assessor for the township for 10 years, and two years as a trustee (which he was serving at the date of publication).

Hamilton Co., IN Census:

Scott Carson – age 47
Nancy J. (Cruzan Chew) Carson – age 34
Did not get full print of the rest of the household.
Fayette Co, IN Census Records:

1910 – Guy W. Carson and Hazel Carson were listed as being 9 years and 7 years old.
1920 – Guy W. Carson and Vida (Ayres) Carson were listed as living with William A. Carson, Bertha (Moffett) Carson and Hazel Carson.
1930 – Hazel Carson was 27 and listed as single, living at home with William A. Carson and Bertha (Moffett) Carson.
