To Jan Hall & others interested in Robert Cruzan: We are descended from the 3 Benjamin Cruzans (Benjamin the Revolutionary soldier married to Jane DeVault/ his son Benjamin the War of 1812 Soldier married to Sarah McMichael/ and his son Benjamin H. Cruzan, a minister, doctor, teacher, and inventor. We believe that the 2nd Benjamin and Sarah McMichael had 2 children in KY before moving to Ohio and marrying. Besides Robert, they also had Mary Ann. Our ancestor Benjamin H. was born in 1813, according to Bible records we have.
Robert was in Rush and Ripley Counties where Benjamin was. Benjamin Cruzan signed for Mary Ann when she married John Green at a young age, and we have a copy of that. Also, we have copies of Benjamin's will and estate papers and Robert and Mary Ann Green are mentioned in his will, right along wtih all his other children and his deceased son Lemnuel's three children, who were raised by their grandparents. Mary Ann was also in Marshall Co, IN, where Benjamin and Sarah lived out their lives and are buried. In fact, Mary Ann is still here in Marshall Co, buried in Bethel Cemetery a short distance away from her sister Margarita Reed. Benjamin and Sarah are just down the road in Sales Cemetery with their daughers Julia Cruzan and Jane Tuttle, Lemuel, and some grandchildren.
We are in correspondence with a descendant of Mary Ann who also believes she is descended from Benjamin. Descendants of Margarita who live in Marshall Co and do genealogy research believe it.
What happened? Well, KY did have a high fee that had to be paid when a couple got married. Maybe they were planning to go to Ohio and started their housekeeping early. Who knows? They were people just like us, and preachers weren't always available either. As far as we're concerned, Robert Cruzan and Mary Ann Green are children of Benjamin Cruzan and Sarah McMichael. All the evidence we have found points to it.
