Hi, Todd,
I just found where you asked on the Cruzan forum what the H. in Benjamin H.
Cruzan's middle name stood for.We don't know!In every document I have ever
seen (and we have many) only the initial has ever appeared. In Mary Anne's book
she says it stands for Harvey. We, his descendants, had always heard him called
Benjamin Harrison Cruzan.
He could not have been named for the president Benjamin Harrison, as they were
contemporaries, and he was on a committee in Marshall County, Indiana to help
elect Benjamin Harrison president. But the Harrison family was very prominent
in Virginia for many generations, and several of that family was named Benjamin,
including a governor. He could have been named for an earlier Benjamin
Harrison.Or his name could have been Harvey, or any other name that starts
with an H.
As I said, we don't know.Benjamin was a minister, doctor, teacher and inventor
AND our most elusive ancestor.
Your ancestor, John Wesley Cruzan, is easier to figure out as he is of course
named for the famous minister, and our Cruzans were Methodist.Benjamin F.
Cruzan, Jr. gave land for the Methodist church in Marshall County, Indiana, and
is buried in that church cemetery. The church building itself is no longer
there.
