The problem with "da Cruz" surname

There are a lot of people with the surname "Cruz", "da Cruz", etc in all world. I think that maybe if you know 2 people from the same city with this same surname they can not be relatives. And as you know "da Cruz" means "of the cross". So, a father or mother can put this surname in their son or daughter just becouse religion reasons!
