HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR SPANISH SURNAMES

If anyone wants to check out the origins of their spanish surname the best book is the "Diccionario Heraldico y Genealogico de Apellidos Espanoles y Americanos" by Alberto & Arturo Carraffa. The surnames have been listed in a searchable index at the Library of Congress website's Hispanic Reading Room. The encyclopedia is in spanish and is available at a few US universities. However the entire work has been placed on microfilm by the LDS church and can be ordered at family history centers. The Cubangenweb site has a usefull listing of the microfilm's catalogue numbers and the corrolation to the Volumes of the Dictionary for easy ordering! This work lists where surnames originated in Spain as well as documenting genealogical lineages of the surnames and coats of arms. It is a VERY GOOD starting point if you don't know where your family came from in Spain!
