As far as I know, "da Cruz" is a Portuguese name and means "of the cross". There isn't one family "da Cruz", but several. It's a religious surname and doesn't really was a family name. All the cruz families today started in diferent place and time. The parents once choose ths surname to their son, so their son would be blessed by the Holy Cross. And him named his own son on the same way.

So, there aren't one origin to "da Cruz" family, but hundreds. :-)
