Sarah "Sally" Vawter is believed to be the daughter of John Vawter (b. ca. 1750 MadisonCo.,Va.; d. 1817 Elbert Co.,Ga.) and his first wife, Frankey Ward (b. Culpeper Co., Va.; d. 1791-92 Stokes Co., NC).Frankey was the daughter of John Ward (b. 1730 Culpeper Co., Va.; d. 1791 Culpeper Co., Va.) and Anna Hill (b. 1730 Middlesex Co., Va.).John and Frankey's children are believed to be:Sarah, John, Richard, James, and Frances.John Vawter married (2nd) Joannah Vernon (b. ca. 1762 Culpeper Co., Va.; d. 1825-26 Elbert Co.,Ga.) by whom he had children:William, Elizabeth, Richard (2nd of that name), Nancy, Lindsay (male), and Russell.
John Vawter is listed on Surry Co./Wilkes Co. (now Stokes Co.), North Carolina, from 1771-1777.In 1775, he was listed with 300 acres in Surry Co.He was a Rev. War soldier for which he received a land grant (1782) for his services. He moved sometime between 1803-1807 to Elbert Co., Ga.
Consequently, Sarah, John and Frankey Vawter's daughter, may have been born in Surry/Stokes Co., NC, rather than Madison Co., Va.It depends on if John and Frankey were actually physically in NC before 1776 or were absentee landowners... I don't know the definitive answer to that.
