Kathleen, there were two Fleming Crumps, both born about the same time. One (not yours) was Fleming T. Crump, who was born in New Kent Co., VA, and I believe him to be the son of Sherwood/Sherrod Crump. This Fleming T. Crump was in the 1860 and 1870 New Kent Co. census records, and so cannot be "your" Fleming since we know he was in St. Louis then. Some people have these two men confused.
The interesting thing is that Sherwood Crump had a son named Caleb, but he was supposedly born 1821 in Estill County, KY, so he would be too young to be Fleming's father.
Do you know where your "Kaleb" was in Kentucky? There may be some connection here if we can just find it.
