This message is meant to inform family genealogists of recent research concerning-- Rev. Richard Bucke and Sgt. Thomas Crump. During the past thirty or forty years, family historians have become more and more interested in accumulating names, dates and locations of ancestors with very little thought to the origin and accuracy of what has been collected. The fact that there is more material available now than any other time in history, indeed, is wonderful and certainly less time consuming and less expensive. Unfortunately, this quest has picked up numerous assumptions that continue to be copied and perpetuated as fact through the genealogical media. I would like to address two situations: Rev. Richard Bucke and Sgt. Thomas Crump. For a number of years, I, too, thought that I descended from these two men, and I proceeded to continue my searches. Let me tell you of the errors that I have found. 1. The father of Rev. Richard Bucke is Edmund Bucke of Wymondham, Norfolk; the grandfather of Richard Bucke is William Bucke of Wymondham, not someone named Edmund Buckenham Bucke. 2. Many people have thought that Rev. Richard Bucke married Elizabeth Browne, daughter of William Browne of Tharston, co. Norfolk, England. Last year, I finally found the last will and testament of William Browne of Tharston. In his will, he named as one legatee his grandson, William Bucke, the son of Richard Bucke, yeoman (farmer), of Norfolk. When I found this and saw that William Browne wrote his will in 1626 and that it was probated in October 1628, I was shocked! This proved that Elizabeth Browne married a different Richard Bucke, not the Rev. Richard Bucke who died between December 1622 and February 1623/24 in Virginia. 3. We know from land records that Rev. Richard Bucke (by his first wife, name now unknown) had a daughter, Elizabeth. She did not come to Virginia with Rev. Bucke and his second wife in 1610; we know this from the extant muster records. 4. We know from land records that Elizabeth Bucke married Thomas Crump and that she eventually inherited all of the Bucke-Crump lands. After Elizabeth Crump's death in 1654, her son, John Crump, inherited all of these lands, which is proven by the land patent records. Now, here comes the terrible news for many of us. 5. There are no known records-no actual court or land documents-which give us any hint at all, that Thomas and Elizabeth Crump had a son named William Crump or Robert Crump. Sadly, earlier researchers have put this into print without any actual evidence or proof. And more sadly, many researchers subsequently took that suggestion as a fact, and perpetuated it. Recently, several Crump family researchers have pooled their research results. The results of this new data prove that there were two men named William Crump who were in Virginia at the same time and living very close to each other. These two different men have been confused over the past and often thought of as one person. We now know from court documents that one William Crump married Frances Mountney, daughter of Hannah Mountney; he did not marry Mary Spillman, as earlier researchers had suggested. And, now, we know that a second William Crump had a wife named Anne, maiden name unknown. The court records show these two men (A & B below) with their respective wives in Virginia at the same time and in different locations. A. William and Frances Crump moved from Lancaster County, Virginia to Talbot County, Maryland with their three children and had three more born in Talbot County. The 1665 court records and the 1695 last Will and Testament of William prove this. B. William and Anne Crump remained in Virginia during this same period and continue to be in court records and involved in buying and selling land, etc. in New Kent and York counties. All 62 of these events have been listed by date and location and charted as the "Chronology of two men named William Crump." It is from all of the recorded events in these court-related documents that we can see that there is no evidence of a son named William born to Sgt. Thomas Crump and his wife, Elizabeth Bucke. ?? What does this mean to so many of us? It means that there are no proven descendants of the Rev. Richard Bucke and his daughter and son-in-law, Sgt. Thomas Crump. If you would like a copy of the information on this chart, I can send it via e-mail. If you have other questions, please contact me. Also, currently there is a group project underway to find the parents/families of the two William Crumps from whom many of us descend. If interested, please contact me. William R. Gann, 2804 S.
