I am looking for any reference to the parents of James.
1. JAMES EDWARD1 SOUTH was born December 23, 1862 in TN, and died April 06, 1904 in Bristol, TN. He married (1) MARY C. CRUMLEY October 16, 1881 in Sullivan County, TN, daughter of PHILLIP CRUMLEY and ELIZABETH STOPHEL. She was born Abt. 1867 in Sullivan County, TN, and died Bet. January 01, 1896 - January 08, 1897 in Sullivan County, TN. He married (2) SARAH LOUVENA MOORE January 08, 1897 in Sullivan County, TN, daughter of HENRY MOORE and MARY MOORE. She was born May 18, 1879 in VA - Date from Memorial Plate. 1900 census has her age 23 born 1877., and died June 13, 1964 in Bristol, TN - Date from Memorial Plate

In "BRISTOL TENNESSEE/VIRGINIA A HISTORY - 1852-1900" by V.N. (Bud) Phillips, on page 145 is listed
James E. South as a carpenter that during the 4th quarter of the 19th century helped build Bristol.

2/16/97 I talked with Ruby (wife of Hubert South, my Dad's uncle) and she said that James was a Preacher at
Woodlawn Babtist Church and that he also was an Insurance Salesman for Metropolitan Insurance Co. She does
not know if he was a carpenter. She said he was 42 years old when he died.
6/12/97 I talked with Dorothy Jones (Carrier) (my Dad's 1st cousin) today and she said that James was never a
Preacher. My Dad asked Hellen Moore (his 1st cousin) to check the church records and the results were negative.
I don't know where Ruby got her information. Dorothy said James was working for the Railroad when he was
killed. The story on James death is he was doing some work for the railroad and was crossing the tracks. There
were two trains moving in opposite directions. When the first one cleared he stepped into the second.

6/13/97 At the Sullivan County Clerks Office in Blountville, I found both marriage records. James E. South and Mary C. Crumley was recorded Oct. 16, 1881 and license was issued for James E. South and Sarah L. Moore on Jan. 8, 1897 but never recorded. I also visited his grave site at the Paperville United Methodist Church Cemetery on Church Circle off the Paperville Road and Old Jonesborough Road. It had a flat stone with the following inscription: "JAMES E. SOUTH BORN DEC 23, 1855 DIED APR. 6, 1904 A precious one has gone. A voice we loved is stilled. A place is vacant in our home. Which never can be filled.". At the top of the stone was a symbol, the Lodge symbol of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. The symbol looks like a carpenter's square cradling a compass with an arm with the hand holding a mallet. The birth date of 1855 is incorrect, he was born in 1862.

6/14/97 I was at the Sullivan County Library in Blountville and found from the 1880 Census that James was a
Farmhand living with L. G. Dryden and Eliza I. Dryden. The Drydens were age 63 and 61; James was age 18 in that census. Also in the Dryden household is Elizabeth (age 56) and Elkanah (age 19) Stophel. The significance here is that not far from the Dryden household is Elizabeth Crumley age 43 and Mary age 12 (351). Elizabeth
Crumley's maiden name is Stophel and they are probably related. This may be how James met Mary Crumley.
On the Sullivan County GENWEB site is a cemetery listing of Cold Springs Cemetery that has the following
Dryden data: Leander G. Dryden b. 1/15/1816 d. 1/18/1896, Elizabeth J. Dryden b. 9/6/1818 d. 12/27/1898.

On 4 September 2004 I received from "Tricia" <mayberry_lady1@yahoo.com> a record from Looney Stophel
that the above Mary Crumley age 12 is most likely the Mary that married James in 1881. Her age at marrige is
estimated at 14.
Elizabeth Stophel (mother of Elizabeth Crumley) was born abt 1795. Elkanah was born in 1827. Haven't been
able to find any marriage for him. There is another Elkanah Stophel, grandson of Elizabeth Stophel. He was
born in 1859. May have been working for the family???Elizabeth Crumley was born 1837 married (1865).
Phillip Crumley (born 1827 and died in 1878).

In the 1880 Census two other Souths William and Samuel are listed in separate households. William South age 12
is a boarder and farm hand in the household of Henry and Sarah Hines. He is not listed as a relative and unlike
James and Samuel he lists Father born in NC and Mother born in VA. James, Samuel, and William are all listed
as born in TN. Samuel South age 4 is listed as a boarder in the household of Phillip and Mary A. Harliss. He is
not listed as a relative. William Brisco age 82 is also listed as a boarder.

On Mon, 7 Jun 1999, Louella sent me this:
"I have another bit of information that may be of some help to you. In the Bristol City Directory for 1896-1897 I
found James and Mary South residing at 1220 5th St (page 78). From this we can assume that Mary was still
living at that time. James married our great-grandmother (Vol 3 page 433 of the Sullivan County marriage
Bonds) shortly after that. If he posted a marriage bond on 1/8/1897 then he must not be married to Mary at that
time. From this it look like something happened to Mary in late 1896 or early 1897."

In the 1900 Census James was listed as a Carpenter. He and his wife Venie had been married 3 years.

An article from the "Bluefield Dailey Telegraph" Bluefield WV, dated 7 April, 1904, states:
Insurance Man Killed by Train-----Bristol, Tenn., April 6--A horrible accident occured on the Southern yards here
this morning when an incoming passenger train ran down James South, solicitor and collector for the
Metropolitan Insurance Company, killing him instantly. He stepped on the main line track to dodge a moving
switch engine and was struck by the passenger train. The deceased was 45 years old and leaves a widow and four
children who reside here.

6/14/97 I found a 1905 news clipping that says "Kinney South is the name of an orphan boy at the poorhouse. He
has fits, and is a pitiable object. His father who was killed on the railroad, was a member of the Junior Order.
Some members of that order paid him a visit Sunday and manifested some interest in this poor, little unfortunate
fellow. We hope they will not forget him."

The following is info I have gathered on the Junior Order:
The JOUAM was founded in 1853 as a fraternal and political secret society for American citizens of both sexes.
Later they added insurance for members. If they still exist it is only at the local lodge level.
Membership in the organization was not contingent upon association with "mechanics." In those days,
"mechanic" meant "artisan" which is why the symbolism may seem close to Masonic--they borrowed from a
symbol they admired. Any native-born white American could join (of either sex which was unusual at the time)
but must believe in a supreme being, support the separation of church and state and not be engaged in the liquor trade.
The JOUAM wanted to prevent sectarian influences in public schools while upholding the reading of the Holy
Bible. They were one of several xenophobic, anti-Catholic organizations that existed at this time.
They had only one degree, had an initiation rite and a burial ceremony for members.
At some point during this century they removed their racial and religious restrictions and opened up membership
to all American citizens of both sexes from "cradle onward." They were in existence up until 1979 (last recorded national address) after that they disappeared from the national level.

I believe that Elizabeth is a Stophel. Next door is Barbara Stoffle, age 44 by herself, then next is Owen and
Emiline Stoffle with 7 sons and two Aunts Sarah and Barbara Miller, ages 70 & 68. This Elizabeth is most
probably the widow of Phillip H. Crumley shown below in the 1870 census.

Elizabeth Stoffel/Stophel born 2/10/1837 died 6/16/1919.

2/16/97 Ruby South, who was the wife of Hubert South, said that Venie's name was Louvenia Moore.

4/4/97 I received a letter from Ruby stating that Venie was a Moore (different line than Ollie) with a full brother
Ed Moore and 3 half brothers Robert, Charley, and William H. Phelps. She was born in 1876. Venie is buried at
the Glenwood Cemetery in the same plot as Ollie Mae and Ray Stoots. Her last husband was a Humphrey.

Louella Jones Burnette is the daughter of Dorothy Carrier Jones a 1st cousin of my dad. Ollie Mae South Carrier
is the sister of my grandfather Robert Edward South Sr.

Maw went by the name of Spangler when she dies, but that was not her last marriage. She was married to Caleb
Spangler prior to her marriage to Mr. Humphreys. Maw and Caleb must have been divorced because Caleb lived
in Salem, VA after 1965. Ollie Mae went to see him while he lived there but I don't remember the year. Sometime
between 1965 and 1977. Maw's marriage to Mr. Humphreys was short lived and occurred sometime in the late
40's or early 50's. I remember him living with Maw when Mom and Dad lived next door to
her. Mom and Dad moved away from that house in 1952-1953. I don't remember the exact year. Mr Humphries or
Humphreys was the father of Ruth Dobbins (wife of Harvey Dobbins). This may give you a clue to finding the
marriage and divorce records in the Bristol, TN or Sullivan County records.

In the 1900 Census of Sullivan County Laura is not listed with the family.
I have found no other records on Laura and have no clue where she went.

My personal thoughts: Looks like my gr grandmother got rid of Kennie as soon as James died. I just wish I could find his sisters Laura and Sarah so as not to forget them either.

8/4/97 I found at the Sullivan County Library in Blountville a record of his death. It said his age was 20 and that he died from "fits" at the poor house, 5th District.

Bristol Herald Courier articles dated Tuesday, April 19, 1910.
Title: KENNY SOUTH DIES AT COUNTY POOR HOUSE MONDAY.
Kenny South, the fifteen year old lad who has been an inmate of the Sullivan county poor house since the
death of his parents a few years ago, died there early Monday morning. The news of his death was received
by Squire R. Pile, who has taken a great interest in the unfortunate boy and who was much grieved to hear it.
His body will be buried beside that of his parents. The funeral will occur today and will be in charge of the J.
O. U. A. M.

I have yet to find the grave sites of Kinnie or his mother. They may be in unmarked graves at the Paperville
Cemetery if the Obituary above is correct. I would think that if he was indeed buried by the JOUAM as his
father was then there would be a stone similar to James'.
