I have been following the exchange between yourself and Wm. Tufts re: Anthony Crum Sr. The book(s) Mr. Tufts refers to must be the following, or one or two thereof: 1. "The Crum Family - Descendants of Anthony Crum Sr.", Cleveland, OH, private publication, 1963 by Judge Donald F. Lybarger. I have not seen this edition, though I do have an earlier edition of it, the date of which I don't remember off-hand. I'll be happy to dig it out if you wish. 2. "The Crum Family in America", written and compiled by Edwin Wallace Crum, M.D., and Ferris Bertrand Crum, Ph.D., Chicago: The Wallace Press, 1949. This volume was based on the hypothesis that Anthony Crum Sr. and Mathias Crum were brothers; it contains the descendancy of both men, the data on Anthony Crum's descendants having been borrowed, with permission, from Judge Lybarger's research. 3. "A Crum Family in America" (an abundantly revised edition of "The Crum Family in America") publ. privately by Dr. Ferris Bertrand Crum, Oak Park, IL, 1965. In this book Dr. Crum expressed some doubt as to the sibling relationship of Anthony Sr. and Mathias, and/but put their lines into two separate sections. I heard a few years ago that someone had copied all or some part(s) of the above books into an LDS file, but I have never tried to look for that file, so can't comment on its content. I am descended from Mathias Crum and have done research on the latter's days in Montgomery Co., VA (1772 till his death ca. 1800, probably in KY), as well as his descendants. I have not tackled the possible relationship to Anthony Sr. The Henry Crum who married Martha Horn was allegedly b. ca. 1775 in VA, d. ca. 1840 in Floyd Co., KY. He was progenitor of a prolific line of Crums, many of whose descendants contribute to this GenForum. I have corresponded with several researchers of Henry's line, and the most serious among them tell tales of frustration in moving upstream of him - there seem to be no reliable data in the records as to his ancestry. A Henry Crum, whose birth date is unknown but would fall within range of the VA-KY Henry's estimated birth date, is listed by Dr. Ferris Crum as a possible grandson of Mathias through the latter's son John, though Dr. Crum does not cite his source, and in his 1965 edition remarks only that "Nothing is known about this man [i.e. Henry], and he is not listed in probate records, so it is possible that he died at an early age." Thus, the link between these to Henrys is impossible to prove. I might mention that all three of the above-mentioned books are rich storehouses of Crum data and priceless starting points for further research; however, the authors in all cases failed to cite sources, failed to have their mss. proofread, and failed to consult the public record (in their day probably not as easily accessible as today); also, they approached their families' histories in an idealistic, somewhat romanticized way. One must use these books (and transcriptions of them!) with extreme caution. I have learned this the hard way! Dick Crum Santa Monica, CA
