re. Canada Crowleys
Yes many of the second generation from here quit farming locally and went to the States. One family had the Father named James D Crowley with sons Pat and Dave. They went to Saginaw Mich. (about 1870) and worked in the lumber business. They later owned two hotels one called the "Crowley House", still standing though no longer in the Crowley name. I got this info from the geneology centre in the Library in Saginaw. I understand the last male of this family died in 1939 and was a batchelor. His name was Francis Crowley son of Pat.
There of course was a very successful James Crowley operated "Crowley's", a downtown Detroit department store. He apparently had 5 daughters and I don't know much about him. This store chain is still in the Detroit area.
I had an Grand Uncle Pat Crowley workedand died in Grand Rapids Mich., and was brought home for burial by his sister in 1905. One other was a William Crowley went to and died in Chicago about 1920.
Several others went to Wisc. and some went to Rochester, NY. No trace of them from here now. There were a lot of Crowley families living in the Peterboro area 150 years ago. The 1951 census shows 7 James Crowleys as living in Otonabee township south of the town of Peterboro.
Some of them apparently were real Rips as local lore indicates that on Market days in town they used to create quite a stir. I think a few of their genes are still active in the community. My guess is there are 30 to 40 Crowley families living in this area still. Many not related to my family.
Three of the prdominant families went by the names as follows. Foxy Crowleys. red hair and highly inquisitive.
Yankee Crowleys. Apparently they came from Ireland thru NY State. and Swampy Crowleys. Came and settled on low land.
One other were the family of "Black Jim" and son Black Dave. Apparently were very dark complectiom. Youngest son James went to Wisc. and many descendants are there today.
I correspond with one named Dawn Crowley. A nice lady and she's been a great help in researching family history.
Let me know if you've and success.Dick
