I believe the name of "John William" Crowley came from Frances Mitchell, in the 1940swho corresponded with Judge Ariel Crowleywho had this Crowley family totally mixed up with another family.A John William Crowley has never been found on any document or census record. My research shows he was "WILLIAM CROWLEY."Not too many had a first and middle name in William's time.
The census records show William Crowley was born about 1799, probably in Henry/Patrick County, Virginia and died 1846 in Bates County, Missouri.Tradition said that William, his wife and two of their little daughters died before adulthood of fever.
William was first noticed when he married 22nd of June 1830 in Saline County, Missouri to (his cousin?) Lucinda "Lucy" Burnett, daughter of Samuel Burnett and Lavinia Cox. The 1830 Census of Saline County shows William as a single man, living in Jefferson Township, age 20-30, born 1800-10. Nearby was the farm of Samuel Burnett, the son of Jeremiah Burnett III and EFFIE CROWLEY.

female 5-10 (1830-1835) 1833
male 5-10 (1830-1835) 1835
male 0-10 (1835-1840) 1837
male 0-10 (1835-1840) 1839
According to the census of Saline and Van Buren Co (became Bates Co), William Crowley was born about 1799 and died 1846 intestate in Bates Co, Missouri with Capt. Jeremiah Burnett as the administer of his estate. Capt. Jeremiah Burnett was a brother of Lucinda, the wife of William Crowley. Jeremiah was not only his brother-in-law, but may have been his cousin as well. The early estate records of Bates County were destroyed by fire and the records of this family are few, however the preponderance of evidence points to the following.
All the "William Crowleys" of Missouri have been reseached and the following is my only explanation for William who married Lucinda Burnett:
Since William appeared out of no where (1830 Census) and died before the 1850 census of Bates Co, Mo was taken, which should have shown the year and state of his birth, the following record MAY (or may not) apply to this man:
1810 Court Orders of Patrick County, Virginia:
"Ordered that the overseer of the poor bind out William Crowley, an orphan boy, (aged 10 years last February) to Granville Penn according to law." (born Feb 1799)
The meaning of "orphan" in those days: "At least his father was dead; his mother may have been living."The above orphan William was left without estate, therefore he was a charge of the court or the "Overseers of the Poor" and was bound out to Penn until age 21 to learn the art of farming or some other occupation, plus reading and writing and math, and at age 21, was given a horse, a new suit of clothes and usually a sum of $10.00.
Tax list of Henry Co, Va
1819 Feb 2 - William Crowley - 1 tithe (age 21+, b. ca 1799), 1 horse
1820 Apr 14 - William Crowley - 1 tithe, 1 horse
1821 Feb 2 - William Crowley - 1 tithe, 1 horse
1822 Apr 12 - William Crowley - 1 tithe, 1 horse - Last record of William in Henry Co.
The Samuel Burnett family left Patrick County about this time and I believe William Crowley made the trek to Missouri Territory with them.
From tradition, "William Crowley and Lucinda Burnett had six children, four sons and two daughters and then both parents died of fever leaving the children orphans. The two daughters of William and Lucy died before adulthood and the sons were sent to live with kin." (From Frances Mitchell, 1940s).
However, the 1840 Census of Van Buren Co, Mo does not agree with the known ages of the children.I believe they had more than 6 children. s/June Bork
