According to records in the possession of others and county records in Virginia today, Jeffrey Crowley moved to America from Northern Ireland with his wife and family in late 1734and settled in Orange County.A while later he moved to Amelia County. In 1749 he patented 1170 acers in Lunenburg County, VA. In 1752 the same land was in Halifax County and later part was in Bedford County when it was formed. The land was on the Little Otter River. Jeffrey had two boys, Benjamin (later known as Benjamin Sr.) and Sam (Old Sam). They owned land on Sandy River. Sam was killed in an Indian battle Point Pleasant on the Ohio., Oct. 10, 1774. His wife was named Elizabeth (do not confuse this with anothe Sam Crowley in the same county whose name was Frances).Jeffrey died in 1762 leaving his will which is recorded in Halifax, VA. His wife, Martha (apparently his second) Had a negro named Peter which he willed to his two boys. He advised that one buy the others interest in Peter. Benjamin bought Sam's share and later the records show he paid taxes on the slave. This is an important fact as it helped to trace that particular Benjamin. There were many as there were many Benjamin Crowley's. Benjamin was a soldier in the French and Indian War and drew land for his services. His wife was named Sara. His great grandson, Historian Ben H. Crowley of Crowley's Ridge AK said Ben and Sara were married circa 1756 in Virvinia. This same historian said that Benjamin came from Ireland with his mother and father (Jeffrey) when he was very young. At about this time in history at the close of the Revolutionary Warmost of the land over the Appalachians belonged to Virginia as it was her soldiers in both the French and Indian as well as the Revolutionary Wars that fought back the British. This western land of the timws was being settled. At the same time in Georgia vast tracts of land were being prepared for settlement. As a result some of our relatives moved both west and south to Georgia. The ones in Georgia settled in what is today Dekalb. Others went to Kentucky. Benjamin Sr's. will was filed for probate October 15, 1817 in Lexington, Georgia. His sons already had begun to scatter. There is a lot of documentation of this and the decendants, many many of them! I suggest you contact Forrest Crowley or purchase "Jennings" The Decendants and Ancestors, Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 88-070684.You may contact Thomas Ernest Jennings, 1009 Rosewood, Arlington, TX76010.
