My aunt Sabra-Jo Crowl, a genelogist, produced a history of the Crowl family with documented evidence dating back to 1733 when Johann Michael Grauel (the original German spelling) arrived in Pennsylvania - the first of the Crowl roots in America. I am a 10th generation Crowl with roots in north eastern Ohio. Unfortunately, the history is incomplete for the later generations, and your grandfather is not listed. However your gandmothers maiden name does appear, so I am certain that I could find an earlier connection if you could forward me names of earlier generations, if possible.
