Banks has Mrs. Elishua CROWE, the 2nd wife of John CROWE, immigrating with 94 other passengers on the ship "Elizabeth Bonaventure" (p. 103) which left the port of Yarmouth, County Norfolk, England the first week of May 1633 under Master John Graves and arrived at Boston June 15, 1633. In 1634 Elishua purchased a home in Charlestown from William Jennings, and on November 4, 1634 joined the 1st Church of Charlestown. John CROWE and Elishua sold this Charlestown house on Apr. 16, 1638 to Mathew Averie. and moved to what would be called Yarmouth in Plymouth Colony.Walter C. Mission notes that Elishua had travelled with the rather well-to-do Thomas CHUBBOCK Family on the "Elizabeth Bonaventure" (Banks, p. 103) although she was listed separately on the ship manifest, and that the Chubbock's had settled on considerable land in Charleston adjacent to the home purchased by Elishua. Could Elishua's maiden surname also have been Chubbock, or could she have been a sister of Thomas' wife, Alice?? Could this family have funded her passage, home, and sustenance until her husband John arrived two years later?? Further investigation of this Chubbock family is in order, especially in England. Peter Wilson Coldham from English Port Records has the ship "Hopewell" under Master John Driver leaving the port of Weymouth, England May 8, 1635 bound for Massachusetts Bay Colony with "John CROWE and his family" (Coldham, Vol 1, p 144). John CROWE was admitted as an inhabitant of Charlestown (Frothingham's History) in 1635, however on April 16, 1638 he and Elishua sold the Charlestown house to Mathew Averie. Perhaps "his family" included Elizabeth, Yelverton, Nasare, & even other children by his 1st marriage. The name of John CROWE's 1st wife and a complete list of all their children may never be determined with certainty, however we do know that John's first wife was buried at New Buckenham, Norfolk, England the 21st day, 3rd month, 1626 from the Parish Records, and that their daughter "Nasare" (uncertain spelling) was baptized in the Parish on the 21st day, 6th month, 1626. Could this 1st wife therefore have died from complications of childbirth ??? There is an excellent possibility that this 1st wife was the daughter of Edward and Nazareth YELVERTON (Doctor of Physick and a recusant). Three interesting references are T.A.G., Vol 35, page 173, July 1958; N.E.H.G.R., Vol __,1971, pages 231- 236; "John CROW & His Descendants", by Levi Crowell, 1903. This latter has several errors as does the three C.W. Swift articles in "Cape Cod Library".
