Crowell Family Genealogy Forum

Just found this forum. Nice to know there are others looking at the Crowell line.My cousin, Barbara Filbin, did quite a lot of research on the Crowells several years ago. Her book, The Crowell Family, is well done and traces our immigrant, John Crowe and wife, Elishua, from arrival in 1635 to present day. John Crowe came from Carleton Rode, Norfolk. I visited the town some years ago and found quite a bit of "Crowe" information, but have yet to establish proof of his parentage. Elishua may have been from the Yelverton family; many Yelvertons and Crowes in the area in the early 17th century. I found letters indicating that the Crowes may have originally come from "Crowe Hall" in Suffolk on the basis of writings on an old armorial slab. Interestingly, the Crowell name here in Hawaii is so common among Hawaiians, that it is considered a Hawaiian name. The Crowell reunions here are huge gatherings of Hawaiian people and I am a welcome member, but a real novelty since I am caucasian. The Crowell-Harbottle families were closely associated with King Kamahameha. From what I can determine, the Hawaiian Crowell families probably descend from the Crowells in Nova Scotia. If anyone knows which of our ancestors came to Hawaii in the 1820's or 30's to establish this line, please contact me (probably one of the whaling trips). One last thing for now. I am governor of the Mayflower Society in Hawaii. My Mayflower descent comes from Apphia Dickinson, who married Edward Crowell (b. 1794 Hawley, MA). I am available to do "look-ups" at the Hawaii State Library, if needed.
