Have you read the excellent article, "Yelverton Crowell of Yarmouth, Mass., A Hypothesis Concerning His Parents and Children" by Stephen W. Gifford, Jr. (published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Oct. 1971)? It is one of the best sources of information about Yelverton, re-caps what we know, and offers theories to cover what we don't. Also, "The Origin of the Crowell and Crowe Families of New England, New Jersey and North Carolina" by John G. Hunt, TAG July, 1959). Also, The Great Migration, Vol. II, p. 245.

First: we do not know for certain the maiden name of Yelverton's wife. It is usually stated as Hammond but I've yet to see a reputable source for the last name. You'll see that Gifford refers to her as Elizabeth ____. (I have read sources that point out there were two Elizabeth Hammond's around the same time, so even if we prove Hammond as her maiden name, we don't know her family.)

Second and more important, we do NOT know who Yelverton's mother was! We can speculate that she was Elishua _____, the wife of John Crowe and mother of at least Moses, John, and Thomas. Her last name is NOT known. It has sometimes been listed as Miller, without a source - I have never seen a plausible argument for her last name as Miller. It's often supposed to be Yelverton, but that is based only on the use of Yelverton as a first name for John's son. If she was not Yelverton Crowell's mother, the theory is baseless. (It is Gifford's theory, clearly stated as such.)

I personally consider it more likely that Yelverton is John's son by a first wife, Nasare _____, buried 1626 (Hunt). Perhaps she was a Yelverton. This, too, is just a theory! We really don't know.

Yelverton seems to have been born around 1615 followed by a sister Elizabeth aound 1617 (TGM). Then, there's quite a gap until Moses baptized in New England 1637, John born estimated 1635 (no baptism yet found), and Thomas perhaps in Yarmouth circa 1645. (A long stretch of childbearing for one wife; IF she was born around 1590 as we guess John Crowe was, that would make her around 55 for Thomas.) More speculation...

I just want to emphasize how little is actually proven about this family!
