STEPHEN CROWELL, BROTHER OF SARAH CROWELL BUSWELL/BOSWELL Stephen Ralph Boswell, As of 4 February 2009 Stephen Crowell, born about l786, probably in, or around, Madison, New Jersey. Died l8 March l848, in New York City, at the age of 62. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Woolf, sister of John Anthony Woolf, Jr., the one that took in Abraham Boswell at an early age, perhaps eight years old, when his father died; and which lived in Pelham, Westchester County, New York. It was while Abraham Boswell was living with the Woolf family in Pelham, New York, that Mormon Missionaries converted the Woolf family to the LDS Church, and they moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1843. Abraham Boswell joined the Church on 30 June 1844, just three days after Joseph Smith was killed in Carthage Jail. Abraham Boswell went to Utah in one of the very early groups, arriving in September l847, just two months after Brigham Young arrived there. The Public Health Records of New York City record Stephen's death, as follows: "March l8, l848, Stephen Crowell, aged 62, l3 Rivington Street, (No place of birth entered), Died Effusion of Brain, Removed from city." Stephen Crowell was the son of Benjamin Crowell, who died in Morristown, New Jersey in l80l; and Mary Bond Crowell (Mary is believed by the Utah Boswells to have been the daughter of Joseph Bond). After Benjamin Crowell died, Mary Bond Crowell and three of her children were baptized into the Presbyterian Church of Madison, New Jersey. Mary was baptized on 26 August l802, and three of her children were baptized on 9 December l802: Seth Crowell, Joseph Crowell, and Martha Ann Crowell. Her other two children are not listed as among those that were baptized: Stephen Crowell, and Sarah Crowell Boswell. No one in the family knows why, yet. Stephen Crowell's wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Woolf, had a brother named John Anthony Woolf, Jr., who had been married just one year earlier, to Sarah Ann Devoe; and this couple agreed to take Abraham Boswell, aged about 8 years, into their family, even though Abraham's mother was still alive. It is supposed that she was too ill to take care of young Abraham; however, she didn't die until 1849, a year after Stephen Crowell died. Sarah was living, at the time of her death, with a daughter, Mary Ann Buswell Dawson. There is a book in the Los Angeles Temple Family History Center in Los Angeles, California, entitled, An Index of the Descendants of John Anthony Woolf and Sarah Ann Devoe. The book does not mention Abraham Boswell, but his being treated as a member of the Woolf family is well documented in family records. The book says that John Anthony Woolf was born on 31 July 1805, in Westchester County, New York. He was the youngest child of Anthony Woolf and Phoebe Weeks. He was the same age as Joseph Smith, having been born in the same year (1805). When the Woolf family moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, they lived on the farm immediately adjacent to the Joseph Smith farm, and his family (and, therefore, Abraham Boswell) were very well acquainted with the Smith family. The book says that John Anthony Woolf became a shoemaker “of great skill,” while living in Westchester County, New York, catering particularly to the trade of the well-to-do in the city of New York. Perhaps his shoemaking skills were learned from Stephen Crowell, his uncle. l832-33, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 33 Chatham l833-34, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 276 Grand A Mary Crowell, who lived on Allen Street, died on 28 June l833, at the age of 79. That means that she was born about l754. Her death record says that she was born in New York. We have not figured out exactly who Mary Crowell was, and how she fits into "our" family. I have sometimes speculated that this may have been Mary Bond Crowell, Stephen's mother, but she appears to have been born too early for that to have been the case. Stephen Crowell was born in about l786, and Sarah Crowell Boswell was born in l793. Mary Crowell would have been 32 in l786, and 39 in l793, so it is not out of the question that this is their mother. Further research is needed. l834-35, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 276 Grand l835-36, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 276 Grand l836-37, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 276 Grand l837-38, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 276 Grand l838-39, No entry for Stephen Crowell l839-40, No entry for Stephen Crowell l840-4l, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 276 Grand This address was in the l0th, l4th, or l8th Ward in the NYC Census, l840. l84l-42, Aged 55, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 276 Grand l842-43, Stephen Crowell, Shoes, 276 Grand Stephen Crowell & Company, Auctioneers and Commercial Merchants, 34 Burlingslip l843-44, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 276 Grand l844-45, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 246 Bowery l845-46, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 246 Bowery l846-47, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, 246 Bowery l847-48, Stephen Crowell, Shoemaker, l3 Rivington As noted earlier, Stephen Crowell died, in New York City, on l8 March l848, at the age of 62. Sarah Crowell Boswell, Stephen's sister, died on 20 May l849. Her death record says that she was born in New Jersey. I have located her mother and fathers records in Morristown and Madison, New Jersey. It is probable that Stephen Crowell and Sarah Crowell Boswell were born in, or around Madison, New Jersey. The Joseph Crowell, Weighmaster, that was listed in so many New York City Directories between l8l4 and his death on 8 November l859, was not the Joseph Crowell that was Stephen's brother. He is a distant relative. His father was Edward Crowell, who died in Woodbridge, New Jersey, in January l80l. If I am not mistaken, Edward Crowell was the son of James Crowell, who was the son of Edward Crowell, the Town Clerk of Woodbridge, New Jersey, from l73l to l756. This Joseph Crowell was married to Ursula FitzRandolph, the daughter of Asher FitzRandolph. Notify Administrator about this message?
