If you have any information on the Crowells of New Jersey, I would like to share information with you. I have alot of data on the Crowell family of New Jersey, but need to find the surname of Benjamin's mother; and the name of his wife's mother. ralphboswell@hotmail.com.

BENJAMIN CROWELL, FATHER OF SARAH CROWELL BUSWELL/BOSWELL

Stephen Ralph Boswell, 5 November 2007

Benjamin Crowell was my third great grandfather. He was married to Mary Bond. His wife's father was, allegedly, Joseph Bond, but I haven't proven that. I don't know the name of his mother, and would like help there. These people all came from New Jersey, where records are hard to find.

Benjamin's father was Edward Crowell, and his mother was Sarah _______. There alot of Edward Crowells from New Jersey, but I haven't found alot of information about this one--except that his first wife was a first cousin, Mary Crowell. I need the surname of his second wife, who was Benjamin Crowell's mother.

Benjamin Crowell died in September 1801, in Morristown, New Jersey. His Letter Of Administration was presented on 15 September 1801, in Morristown, signed by Zophar Freeman, Jr., and Thomas Eddy, Administrators; and was witnessed by four men: (1) Zophar Freeman, Jr.; (2) Thomas Eddy, also a first cousin of Benjamin Crowell; (3) Nathaniel Bond, Benjamin Crowell's brother-in-law; and 4. Daniel Crane. The total value of his belongings, according to the Inventory taken by Daniel Crane, was $119.50. A copy of this letter of Administration is in the possession of Stephen Ralph Boswell. More about the four witnesses in the next paragraph.

Four Witnesses To the Letter of Adminstration of Benjamin Crowell:

1. Zophar Freeman, Jr., who married Mary Crowell, a lst cousin of Benjamin Crowell (Mary Crowell was a daughter of Seth Crowell, Jr., and Joanna Parkhurst). Seth Crowell, Jr., was a brother of Edward Crowell, Benjamin Crowell's father. That makes Mary Crowell a first cousin to Benjamin Crowell.

Interestingly enough, Zophar Freeman,Jr., was a friend of the next witness (Thomas Eddy), and became the executor of his estate when he died in l8l3, in Madison, New Jersey (along with Thomas Eddy's wife, whose name was Elizabeth).

2. Thomas Eddy, a 1st cousin of Benjamin Crowell. Thomas Eddy's father, John Eddy, Jr., married Hannah Crowell, daughter of Seth Crowell and Mary _______, his first wife. Benjamin Crowell's father, Edward Crowell, was a son of Seth Crowell and Else Eddy, his second wife. That makes Thomas Eddy and Benjamin Crowell, first cousins. They had the same grandfather, but they had different grandmothers.

Hannah Crowell (Thomas Eddy's mother), being the daughter of Seth and Mary Crowell, and a half-sister of Edward Crowell, was, therefore, an aunt of Benjamin Crowell.

3. Nathaniel Bond, Benjamin Crowell's brother-in-law. Nathaniel Bond was a brother of Mary Bond, the wife of Benjamin Crowell. Benjamin Crowell and Mary Bond were the parents of Sarah Crowell Boswell (the wife of Abraham Shotwell Buswell/Boswell).

Nathaniel Bond was born l0 December l762, probably in Morris County New Jersey. He died in Ohio on 20 January l855. His first wife was Elizabeth Dickenson. They had a son, Bonnell Bond. Nathaniel married, 2nd, Rachel Potter, on 2 February l793. They were members of the lst Presbyterian Church in Morristown. They had a son named John Bond, who was baptized 5 February l797. This John Bond married Elizabeth Crowell, daughter of Moses Crowell and Charlotte____________. Elizabeth Crowell was born l8 September l802, and was married on 29 February l822.

4. Moses Crowell died between l805 and l808. The first child of John Bond and Elizabeth Crowell was Moses Crowell Bond. After Moses Crowell died, Charlotte

_________ Crowell married, 2nd, Caleb Bond, who was a brother of Nathaniel Bond. In other words, she married her first husband's uncle.

Caleb Bond and Charlotte _______ Crowell Bond, widow of Moses Crowell, were married at Morristown, New Jersey, in l809. They moved to Ohio in l8ll or l8l2.

Daniel Crane could have been a distant relative, also, but I don't know the relationship, if any. A John Eddy, of Spring Valley, Morris Co., New Jersey, married, 19 November 1801, Catherine Crane, of Green Village.
