There is a Crowell DNA study at Family Tree DNA and you would be welcomed with open arms! We have proved several cousins and lines of descent in the German families - frequently under the current spelling Crowl but several spelled Crowell. We are eager for Crowell men from the English lines of descent to join as we have only a handful to date. My family descends from John Crowe and Yelverton Crowell, early immigrants from county Norfolk, England, to Massachusetts and among the founders of Yarmouth on Cape Cod circa 1638. There are many questions to answer about these lines, and DNA could prove very helpful.

These DNA tests examine only a portion of the Y DNA, which is handed down father to son through the generations unchanged except for random mutations. You have the same exact markers as your early paternal ancestors aside from a few chance mutations. Even if you're lucky enough to have a well-documented paper trail, it is still thrilling to match genetic cousins who descend from the same ancestor!

Joining is simple at the Family Tree DNA web-site. Or, you can contact me and I'll be happy to help. Our study is listed as CROWL/CROWELL. They will mail you a DNA collection kit consisting of a q-tip cheek swab and sterile return mailing material. The basic test, which measures 12 markers, is I believe $99. The test can be expanded to 25 markers, which we recommend.

I strongly urge you to join us!
