I am trying to track down a Crowell Noe of Norfolk, Virginia. He was born in New Jersey about 1805 and died about 1872 in Norfolk. He married Feb. 12, 1833 in Norfolk to Mary Eliza Spaulding. He was a brickmason. They had six children who lived past infancy; Simeon Marsh, Roberta Cecilia, Virginia Clementina, Mary Eliza, Edgar James and Walter C. The family were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk in the 1850s and 1860s, at a time when DeWitt C., Hannah, Harriet and Emma Louisa Crowell were also members. Crowell may have had a brother or close relative named James Noe who was living in Petersburg, Virginia in 1830.
Crowell is almost certainly a member of the Noe family of Middlesex County, New Jersey. That family intermarried several times with the Crowells of Woodbridge, but all the Crowell-Noe marriages I have been able to locate took place after 1805. If anyone has any idea from where Crowell's name might have derived, I would be most grateful.
