John Crowell Zilpha Williams Nash County NC
Posted by: Guy Baker (ID *****2524) Date: April 20, 2008 at 05:47:22
  of 1974

John Crowell was born before 1775; he died Feb-Apr 1819; his wife Zilpha Williams, daughter of Joel and Penny Williams, was born before 1795. From abstracts of Nash County court minutes: (earliest John Crowell record in minutes) May 1803 deed of sale from Martha Crowell to John Wells proven by oath of John Crowell; numerous entries 1804-1819 including deeds, children bound to him, returns as captain of his district, as a witness, as security; Aug 1818 John Crowell provided security for motion on estate of Joel Williams (record interlined); Aug 1818 purported will of Joel Williams “offered for probate by Drury Williams one of the executors therein named” challenged by children of Joel Williams (Zilpha Crowell wife of John, Robert Williams, Wilson Williams, Nathan Williams, Henry Williams) and by widow Penny Williams, jury said “the paper writing does not Contain the last will and testament of the Said Joel Williams”; Feb 1819 deed of sale from John Crowell to Theophilus Eatman proven by James B. Crowell; May 1819 commissioners ordered to lay off and allot to Zilpha Crowell widow of John Crowell one year’s support for her and her family; May 1819 John Ricks testified Zilpha Crowell relinquished right of administrator of her late husband John Crowell; May 1819 administration of the John Crowell estate granted to David Ricks, bonded; May 1819 ordered David Ricks to sell perishable estate of John Crowell; Aug 1819 return of account of provisions to the widow of John Crowell; Feb 1820 ordered that the administrator of John Crowell sell perishable estate on credit; Aug 1820 ordered that the administrator of John Crowell sell perishable estate; Nov 1826 David Ricks administrator of John Crowell estate vs Claiborne Mann and Willie Pridgen, administrators of Drewry Pridgen estate, in favor of John Crowell estate; Feb 1827 David Ricks administrator of John Crowell estate against Claiborne Mann and Willie Pridgen, administrators of Drewry Pridgen estate concerning “costs of the Copy of the Record from the Supreme Court introduced in the trial” (note, there may be records form the above suits that contain names of family members). The other Crowell family in Nash County at the time was that of John Crowell’s brother, James Barnes Crowell. The Federal Census for James B. Crowell 1800-1820 showed no more than three possible daughters for him 1800-1820. James B. Crowell had three documented daughters: Isley Crowell Williams mentioned in his will; Susan Crowell Barbee mentioned in his will; and Ellen Crowell who was recorded with Susan Crowell three days before the marriage of Susan Crowell to Willis Barbee (as part of an estate division in which their father sold some of the estate to his children). Elmina R. Crowell was already married to Alfred Thompson at the time (so Ellen Crowell, daughter of James B. Crowell, was not Elmina Crowell). Elmina R. Crowell (recorded Elimma R. Crowell) was married in Nash County and born about 1819; John Crowell died before May 1819, his widow, Zilpha Crowell, had two females under the age of 10 in her household in the 1820 Nash County Federal Census and theirs was the only other Crowell household in Nash County at the time; (possible daughter of Zilpha Crowell) Nov 1826 Henry Flowers to show cause why he should not pay $10 for support of the illegitimate child of Elizabeth Crowell of whom he was the reputed father; (possibly Zilpha Crowell, widow of John Crowell, or a daughter) Feb 1827 Archibald Lamon ordered to pay Zilpha Crowell $15 first year and $10 annually for support of her illegitimate child of whom he was the reputed father (child probably born about 1826-1827). Alfred Thompson, husband of Elmina Crowell, was bondsman when Joseph J. Crowell married Lavina W. Williams on 30 Nov 1841 in Nash County (Early Marriages of Nash County by Williams and Griffin)
