The Charleston Daily News February 29, 1868 Obituary CROWELL – DIED in the City of Augusta, on the 3d of December, 1867, of Phthisis, Dr. N. Savage Crowell, of Beaufort, S.C., aged 38 years. He was born near Bluffton, and resided since the war at the home-place, Linden, on May River. He entered the United States army in 1854, as Assistant Surgeon; served meritoriously upon the Western frontier and in California – where he was stationed at the commencement of the late war. Filled with the enthusiasm of his native section he promptly resigned, accepting afterwards a Surgeon’s commission in the Confederate States army. He soon attained to that distinction which his eminent qualifications secured, serving at successive periods as Medical Director upon the Peninsular, of the Departments of the Mississippi and East Louisiana, and of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The announcement of his death will cast a gloom, even outside of the family circle, over his numerous friends, North and South, who know his virtues and will cherish his memory. A sincere friend, sensitive to all the obligations of life; a conscientious officer, sublimely moral and upright; and an educated physician, he needs no other tribute from surviving friends than that he acted well his part – “there all the honor lies.” He saw the end of his earthly hopes from the beginning, and calmly rested his faith in that bosom whence only love and mercy emanate. Hope someone can use this info from an old newspaper that I just acquired. I am not related. Julie
