I haven't heard the story of John Crowe II being corupted into Crowell. As reasonable as it sounds, I have my doubts. As was pointed out, Yelverton signed his will John Crowe, alis Crowell, and from then on it has been Crowell. The story about the "m" being dropped from Cromwell was widely circulated in the 1930s and is mostly untrue, although you could understand why some would want to do so. The English Crowells stem largely from Crowe.
