Yesterday I found your query about Stephen Martin Crowder (b. 1817) on the Crowder GenForum webpage. I'm descended from Joseph Crowder (born abt 1810, VA) and his son, Joseph Edward Crowder (born 1835, Bedford Co. VA). My Crowders ended up in Appanoose Co. IA and Putnam Co. MO.

I have a large computer database of various Crowders I've come across in the course of looking for my line. I looked for your Stephen and also did a search for South Carolina, White Co. IL, and Marshall Co. IA. I can't say for sure who Stephen's father was, but I have found a possibility and I may have come up with a couple of Stephen's brothers.

The only Crowder I could find with a SC connection who was the right age to be Stephen's father was Ira Crowder (born abt 1794, SC). Ira married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). You say Stephen's mother was named Elizabeth (of course, that was a common name). I list the children of Ira and Elizabeth as Mary, Bailey, Isaac, Ellsberry, John, Levi, and Elijah. The list may or may not be complete. According to census records, Ira was living in Buncombe Co. NC in 1840 and 1850.

The 1840 census places Stephen Crowder in White Co. IL (you say he was married there in 1836). David A. Crowder was also living in White Co. in 1840. David was born in SC or NC in 1818. He married Evaline Williams in 1837 (IL). David's children were Sarah E., Susan, William, John A., Jacob D., Sallie, and Enis. He later lived in Pike Co. IL (1850), Sullivan Co. MO (1860), and Linn Co. MO (died there in 1864) (source: History of Linn County, Missouri, c1882). John H. Crowder was born in SC about 1810. He was living in White Co. IL in 1850. John married Mary A. (maiden name unknown). John was the father of Mary E., Louisa J., James R., Samuel, and John A.

That's what I've found. Ira may have been an uncle of Stephen, if not his father (I notice that neither Stephen nor David are listed as children). Hope this helps. I'm also posting this message at the GenForum site.
