Enoch Herbert Crowder was the uncle of my Grandmother Eleanor Mar Crowder (later married to Samuel Newton Wyckoff Knight). Enoch was the brother of her father, Lorenzo Byron Crowder. In 1897, the year my grandmother was born, Lorenzo left Missouri and moved to Helena Montana, where he had a men's clothing store on Main street. Enoch visited them after a trip to Japan, where he bought my grandmother a full kimono. I have a picture of her at a young age (5 or 6?) dressed in the kimono from Uncle Enoch. Lorenzo died around 1912 or so and my grandmother and her mother moved back to Missouri to be near family. I could be wrong on this, but I believe that Enoch helped to pay for her education at a music conservatory in Missouri. Eleanor was an accomplished harp player and performed in Vaudeville on the Redpath Circuit.
