I am looking for ancestoral information on William Crowder (my 6th Great-Grandfather). It is believed that he was born about 1730 in Virginia. He was married to Hannah Rous of Kinderhook, NY. Below is an extract from my files which is a compilation of information from a book, "William Crowder, Loyalist" written by Norm and Ruth Crowder. I have also added some additional information received from other sources. William's place of birth in Virginia in not clear. nor is the exact date of birth, or the names of his parents. He could be the son of Bartholomew and Elizabeth Crowder but that is most unlikely as their son William was born about seven years earlier on August 23, 1723. There is evidence that at least two brothers existed. There are references to an Anthony in New York and John in Pennsylvania in the pre-revolutionary years. No links have been confirmed but William had two sons also named Anthony and John so there is the possibility that these were brothers. William, his five sons and one grandson all served with the British forces during the Revolutionary War. Once in Canada, they and there descendants received land grants and compensation for lands lost in the USA during the war. William acquired land in 1778 in Charlottenburg Township. Son, James, was granted land in Osnabruck Township. No records of William's death exist. Some believe he moved to Haldimand Township after the War of 1812 and lived with son John until his death in about 1838 (he would have been 110). There is also clear indication on the land records of Osnabruck Township that William died prior to March 22, 1815. The following is from the muster roll of men raised in the County of Albany for Captain Van Veghten's Company, May the 1st, 1760. William Crowder enlisted: April 4, 1760. There are also several Muster Roll entries for William Crowder (also spelt Crouder and Crousder) for 1755 under Captain Philip Jno. Schuyer's Company.
