Crow and Henry

I am currently finishing research on an upcoming biography of Robert Henry, the Revolutionary War hero of King’s Mountain. Robert settled in Western North Carolina in the late 1700’s. Robert’s son, William Lewis Henry, had a daughter named Mary Arizona Henry, who married John B Hyatt and migrated to Washington State around 1900. She died in Grays Harbor County in 1941.

Mary Arizona Henry, granddaughter of Robert Henry, had a son named Harry Hyatt and daughters Annie and Sydney, who married Emil Hess and Charlie Crow. I am also trying to locate Hyatt, Crow and Hess descendants. Annie Hess is on the 1930 census in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, Washington State. In 1920 Sydney Crow is in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, Washington State.

Although I absolutely welcome any and all Henry family information, some of which may be included in the book, I am particularly intrigued by a story related to me about the “Silver Whistle”. As the story goes, Ferguson, the British General at King’s Mountain directed his troops by the sound of a silver whistle he carried.

After he was killed the whistle was supposedly given to young Robert Henry, who had been bayoneted in the leg during the battle. I was told that relatives from Washington State had visited other Henry descendants in North Carolina years ago, and stated that their grandmother had this whistle. I would like to know if that story is true, and if so, does the whistle still exist?

If anyone has something they are willing to share about the these families: stories, documents, photos, anything, please respond either on the list or via email. I do have a lot of information I can share with you also.

Thank You,
Rick Russell
