Obituary of George Edward Crow
The body of George E (Edward). Crow, whose death was mentioned in our paper last week, arrived in Corning Friday and the funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Len Allen, daughter of the deceased gentleman. Mr. Crow was one of the earliest settlers of Adams County, a good man in every way, and an estimable citizen. The following from the Massena Echo, conducted by Charles Crow, son of the subject of this sketch, gives the particulars of Mr. Crow’s life:
George E. Crow was born in McConnelsville, Ohio, June 14, 1840. Came to this western wilderness and settled with his father at Quincy, Adams County, on October 31, 1856. Enlisted in Company D 29th Iowa Volunteer Infantry April 1862, and served in the Army of the Gulf until the close of the war, participating in many hot fights and fierce skirmishes but no major offenses. Was wounded at Prairie De Ann. He was at his death one of the very few of his company (still) living. Returning to civil life he was united in marriage to Miss Fannie Harlow, who died April 29, 1900. Six children survive the marriage, namely: C.E. Crow, Massena; Mrs. Willard Walton, Council Bluffs; Mrs. F.G. White and Mrs. S.P. Shaw, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mrs. Len M. Allen, Corning and Mrs. Ray Williams, Muscatine.
Some sixteen years ago he went to Ager, California, where he purchased some ranch land, to which he added from time to time, and finding the climate better for his health continued to stay but always planning on ultimately returning to Iowa to end his days with his children. But time is a thief and so stealthily he stole along that six homes are now bereft of what they most longingly desired – to make comfortable in his old days one who had done his best for them from childhood to manhood and womanhood. But if time has cheated us in this most cherished hope he has still been kind for we have a memory that will endure.
