There is a theory that is offered in an articleby Stephen W. Gifford, Jr in the New England Register, vol 125 pg 231-35.Gifford contends that the "John Crow" who is commonly identified as Yelverton's brother is in fact his father. His argument is based on the ages of their first born children, and other factors. As far as the name changing from Crow or Crowe to Crowell, Gifford also states the following," 'Crowe' seems to bave been the conventional English spelling of this surname in the 16th amd 17th centuries. It often appeared as 'Crow' in Plymouth and Boston records, and became Crowell during the second generation in New England."
I have yet to find anyone who has found any information on the Crow/Crowell family prior to their being in Charlestown MA, where they arrived in 1634/1635, other than that they came from Carlton Rode Parish, Norfolk England.
If anyone has any information it would be appreciated.
