Hi David,
It's been awhile since I checked the boards at Genealogy.com and since we had a death in the family I went looking for Burt to notify him.
My family is caucasian, from the line of Charles Crosswhite m. June Kirkbride-Zorabedian, Charles the son of Clarence Crosswhite m. Myrtle Kuehner, Clarence the son of Francis Crosswaite/Crosswhite m. Josephine Jones (Cherokee Indian), Francis the son of George W. Crosswaite m. Deborah Cooper in Adams County Ohio.My relatives floated between Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi.
The reason I tell you all this is, that in the search for relatives, I have online come across several Crosswhite wills that show slaves being owned. All of them were set free on the death of the owners. All the wills were that of women.Crosswhite daughters so to speak. One of the wills passed slaves from one generation to the next.Found a later will that freed that slave on the death of the owner.
I'm afraid my computer went south on me and I haven't been able to reload my files as yet.As soon as I get my cd-rom working again I can send you the history I have on my family and you can look from there.
Civil war records have a lot of Crosswhite's in the civil was.I found many fighting for the union and one Confederate that was killed in a battle in Tennessee I think....He was pretty young like 18.
Also, just a note of curious proportions.I was working for the State of Washington in the 1990's when an African American gentleman came into the office and was surprised to see my Crosswhite name on the name plate. He too was a Crosswhite. His family had moved from the Kentucky/Missouri area and the family name was picked up there. They now live in Northern Idaho and in the Seattle area.Maybe you can pick up something in the Idaho Census or the Washington state Census.I think Washington became a state in 1889, and Idaho was right in there.
Hope this gives you some searching help.
