Does anyone have more information about Lewis Cross? I just recently got these two obituaries for E.T. Cross. E is probably for Edwin, although I have seen Edward as well. The T is for Thomas. E.T. is the son of John Cross and Matilda (possibly Standish if you believe the obits). John says that he is from New Hampshire in most census records, most of his children were bornin NY or OH. The obits say he emigrated from England. The obits also mention the early death of E.T.'s mother and his move to Iowa to live with an "aunt" - although I believe he is actually living with Lewis and Chloe Cross in Adams, Deleware, Iowa in the 1860 census. I would love to see proof that Lewis and John are brothers. Another note about Lewis - E.T.'s sister, Alma Matilda (Cross) Reed, named one of her sons Lewis Standish Reed. That is a lot of coincidences. Here are the obituaries and some notes: -- Jetmore Republican - September 24, 1909 -- Edwin T. Cross was born in Homer, Medina County, Ohio, January 9, 1839. His mother died when he was two and he lived with an aunt until adult age. He moved from Ohio to Iowa. In the Civil War he enlisted in the Federal Army and served 3 and a half years, and then one and a half years in the service of the government. He has lived in Kansas forty years. Twenty three years ago he came to Hodgeman County. There survived him two brothers and a sister as follows: Fred J. Cross, 74 years old, Keystone, South Dakota, Charles Cross, 81 years old, in Illinois, Alma Reed, the wife of our fellow townsman, G.W. Reed, his sister who preceeded him in death, on February 1909. With her he made his home for 25 years. He was of old English stock, his parents, John and Matilda Cross emigrated to this country from England. On his mothers side he is a direct descendant of Miles Standish. -- Western Herald - September 23, 1909 -- Edwin T. Cross was born in Homer, Medina County, Ohio, January 9, 1839. His mother died when he was two and he lived with an aunt until adult age. He moved from Ohio to Indiana. He enlisted in the Federal Army and served 3 years, then served 1 1/2 on the border, 4 1/2 for the government. Twenty three years ago he came to Hodgeman County. There survived him two brothers and one sister: Fred J. Cross, 74 years old, Keystone, South Dakota, Charles Cross, 81 years old in Illinois. Augusta Lee, 77 years old, Glade Kansas. Alma Reed, wife of our townsman G.W. Reed, his sister who preceeded him in death on February 1901 With her made his home 25 years. He was of old English stock. His parents and Matilda Cross emigrated to this country from England. On his mothers side he is a direct descendant of Miles Standish. Notes about the Western Herald: -E.T. server in he Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War - so I don't believe he moved to Indiana, but to Iowa as the Jetmore Republican states -Alma died in 1909, not 1901 (this could have been a transcription error as I have not seen the original obit - just a transcription) -The Western Herald does include information about Augusta Lee that is missing from the Jetmore Republican version Any information on this family is greatly appreciated! Thanks :) Notify Administrator about this message?
