I found that there were a lot of questions and not much had been done on the Nicholas Cross line. My uncle is Charles Christopher Cross, and with some help from a cross cousin Hallie Davis, I got past the problem with Eusebius David CROSS who I thought was Edgar. So now we have the lineage back as:
Charles Christopher Cross > William Martin CROSS b: 1872 > Eusebius David CROSS b: 22 NOV 1845 > Catharine CROSS b: 1824 & COLLINS > Isaac CROSS b: 1793 & Hannah > Nicholas CROSS b: 1772 d: 1828 & Katherine.

Nicholas Cross will tie together most of the Cross descendants of Monongalia Co. West Virginia. There are some indications that Nicholas' parents came from New Jersey and settled in Fayette Co. Pennsylvania. They were next in Greene Co. Pennsylvania and then several decades in Monongalia Co. Virginia. At least a couple of the sons, Nicholas Jr and Samuel went to Wetzel Co Virginia about 1848.
There could be birth or baptismal records in Fayette Co. Pennsylvania. I've heard there is a Will, but I haven't seen it yet.
This research is based on the census records and a few posts on the Internet. It certainly can't be totally correct. Post your comments and sources so others can draw a better conclusion. I worked from the 1850-60 census backwards. Since census before 1850 only listed head of household, I've filled in additional names from later census. The age ranges on early census are helpful, since I was alternating between Samuel and Isaac as the oldest child of Nicholas. Samuel had more children so he might have been older or gotten married earlier. The 1850 census lists both born 1795. If you do the math on the 1820 census; Isaac Cross age 26-45 would be born 1794 in order to be 26. A 1795 birth makes him 25 and he wouldn't fit that entry. Of course, you can argue that there is always a little leeway to be given when working with the census. But that is why I listed him as oldest at this time.
In some cases, one census entry does not thrill me with proof of anything. Please post additional data if you'd like me to consider changing things.

Nicholas Cross had nine sons, the youngest was James, the seventh was Daniel and the eighth was George. Another son was Nicholas G.(my gggrandfather). Old Nicholas died 1828 in Monongalia County VA (now WV). Another of his sons was William Cross.
I have not been able to establish where Nicholas was born. Currently, my research indicates NJ, maybe in Somerset County (but that is just a guess based on some folklore I've picked up in my research.

The Nicholas Cross of Greene Twp, Greene County, Pennsylvania has an exact match (plus one) for the number of children listed in the 1820 census. Greene County PA borders the north side of Monongalia county WV.
The Cross family moved to Monongalia County Virginia between 1816 and 1819. They came from Greene Twp, Greene county, Pennsylvania. All the children have Pennsylvania birth places except Isaac in New Jersey.
In 1820 the census column headers are:
males 0-10; 10-16; 16-18; 16-26; 26-45; 45+ :
Females had 5 columns and dropped the 16-18 which was used for military age. You can see the oldest are Nicholas Sr. and William who are over 45. Three others are in the 16-26 column and are un-named. It is easily seen that William's wife has died, and it is more likely that Nicholas is the correct parent for the family. Also the birthdate for Nicholas has to be before 1775. The Internet trees that list Nicholas born 1782 were based on an incorrect estimate. vt.

(Nicholas G. Cross, settled in Monongalia Co., VA around 1816. (In) the old tax records in Greene Co., Greene Twp. (Pennsylvania) There was a notation that Nicholas Cross was "removed" in 1816. Nicholas G. would have been about 18 yrs old. Nicholas Sr. died in 1828 in Monongalia Co. In 1848, Nicholas G. and wife, Anna, were among the original founders of the Harmony Baptist Church in Burton, (Wetzel, West Virginia). In 1848 Nicholas G. bought property in Wetzel Co., VA. I have that deed.)

(I don't know why I can't find James Aaron Cross on 1850 census, I'm not sure who his parents should be, since Nicholas and Katharine are parents of James Logan Cross. A little later I found an IGI entry for Griffen Sanford Cross b. 1843 whose parent name was James L. or Aaron Cross. Maybe Logan and Aaron are the same person.)
