You are correct, I should have listed Patrick's age as listed on the London, England censes. In 1871 he was listed as 37 and born in Ireland; on the 1881 census he was 47, but on the 1891 he was 54, and 75 on the 1901 census. On the latter two he also listed his birthplace as Tipperary, Ireland. If the first two censes were correct that would have made his year of birth as 1834.On all his occupation remained consistent, "road paver," which was the same for his sons in London and later in New York.
Patrick's parents possibly left Ireland during the early years of the famine, but family lore has it that his father was an Irish rebel wanted by the British and he thought the safest place to hide was London. He married Margaret Hartery, daughter of William and Mary Avery (both born in Ireland) on 8 Jun 1857 in Dowlais Catholic Ch., Glamorgan, Wales, NOT Ireland. On the 1861 census she is listed as Margaret Cronin and living with her parents in Merthyr, Glamorgan, Wales. This is the year my great grandfather was born but he always claimed he was born in London.
