Hello,
I am searching for my Goodman family in Kentucky, who originally came through Tennessee, and Missouri, and noticed your family was from Tennessee. I wonder if they were connected, or if you have come across them in your search.
My great grandfather was Henry Albert Goodman, who joined the army as a boy in MO. and was discharged at Louisville, KY, and remained there the rest of his life. His father was Martin Goodman, from TN, according to the census records of 1850 and 1860. Here is some of the information I have gathered on them:
The 1850 U.S. census for Canaan Township, Gasconade Co., Missouri taken on Oct. 29, 1850 lists:
Martin Goodman, age 37, Male, farmer, born in Tennessee; Martha J. Goodman, age 14, Female; William J. Goodman, age 12, Male; John Goodman, age 10, male; Henry A. Goodman, age 8, and living next door was: William Goodman, age 56, Male, Blacksmith from Tennessee; Rohdin Goodman, age 55, Female from Tennessee.
The 1860 U.S. Census for Rolla Twp., Phelps Co., MO, Pg.028, lists: J.M. Goodman 47, Male, Farmer, $600 personal property, $600 worth of land, from KY; E. Goodman, 39, Female from Virginia; J.L. Goodman, 17, Male, farmer from MO; H. A. Goodman, 15, Male, farmer from MO; M.C. Goodman, 4, Female from MO; E.M. Goodman, 9Mo., Male, from MO; J. Fuller, 14, Male, from Virginia; M. Ch----?, 22, Female, from TN.(This indicates that Martin was remarried sometime before 1855, and Henry had at least two half siblings. We don't know what to do with the 22 yr old F). Also the 1860 census, on Pg. 029 lists Henry's Brother Wm, now 24 years old as working as a laborer on a near-by farm owned by James Spengar? and family: Wm Goodman, 24, Male, Labour with $50 in personal property, and from MO.
Volunteer Enlistment: state of Missouri, town of Rolla, county of Gasconade; age 18, occupation- farmer, on the 7th day of Sept. 1862 (blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, height 5 ft. 6in.) Binton Barracks, MO. Company E, 32nd Regiment of MO. Infantry, for 3 years. It was reported he died on Jan. 27, 1863 on board steamer "Isabella",however he was reported absent on March & April 1863 roll call -as sick at St. Louis, MO since Jan. 23, 1863 (remained absent until roll call of March & April 1864)
On May 29, 1865, they combined the Batt'n 31 & 32. He mustered out in Louisville KY on July 18, 1865.
Clothing account from April to July was due $5.73; due $100 on arms and equipment.
1870 US Census, Christiansburg Pct. Shelby Co, KY, Bagdad P.O., Pg. 446 lists: Goodman, Henry, age 25, Male, White, Carpenter from KY, evidently boarding with a Duncan family.
