Can anyone help me? I have seen claims that Francis ANGER, 1st Baron Longford was a cousin of Oliver CROWELL via his maternal side. ANGER was a son of Richard ANGER and Rose daughter of William STEWARD of County of Cambridge according to the Heralds Visitations of 1575 and 1619.

Cromwell was the son of Robert CROMWELL and Elizabeth STEWARD. Elizabeth was the daughter of William STEWARD of Ely, and obviously if this is the same William STEWARD, Oliver CROMWELL and Francis ANGER would be first cousins.

It would be consistent with the status of the families. The ANGERs were married into BUTTS family (William BUTTS physician to Henry VIII) and the BACON family (Nathaniel Keeper of the Great Seal of England). Richard ANGER was the Treasurer of Grays Inn, London. Francis ANGER was the Master of the Rolls in Ireland and so all these families look to be staunch Protestants.

The problem lies in that there is no known sister Rose for Elizabeth STEWARD, as far as I am aware. My belief, though without proof, is that Rose may actually be Eleanor.
