This is off the top of my head, but years ago I researched James Crofts, Duke of Monmouth. Look him up under that title. As I recall the Duke took the surname Crofts from his guardian who was a member of the court. When the Duke married he took his wife's surname of Scott. He was beheaded for raising an army to claim the throne. Good luck.
